For most companies, going ‘into the red’ would be a bad thing. But for DiGiCo the exact opposite is true, because the company’s new and most exceptionally priced mixing system yet - the SD9 - features the coolest shade of crimson. Being launched at ProLight+Sound 2010, the SD9 is set to redefine what the audio industry expects from a compact digital console.
Where the SD8 is DiGiCo’s ‘gold standard’, the SD9 is the company’s ‘red revolution’. Receiving its worldwide launch in DiGiCo’s training room in Hall 8.0, the SD9 is a complete, integrated system, which includes the mixing surface, a D-Rack digital stage interface and CAT5E digital multicore, with the additional ability to simultaneously record 56 channels direct to your favourite multitrack software or DAW. And it all comes at a price which makes the SD9 the perfect solution for touring bands, schools, conference centres, smaller theatres, houses of worship and a host of other applications where exceptional performance and flexibility need to be realised on a tight budget.

It offered what was needed right then and provided a reserve for more, making sure that the next ideas could be accommodated and the best return on investment delivered. It promised an entirely new dimension in the world of digital mixing.

A Ripple That is Spreading Fast
At this year’s Winter NAMM, DiGiCo and Waves announced a technology agreement between the two companies that sent a ripple of anticipation through the industry – Waves plug-ins would soon be available on DiGiCo’s SD series consoles.
Unlike other options, the DiGiCo/Waves SoundGrid will be fully integrated into the console. This best of both worlds is something that many engineers have been dreaming of and it is set to become an undeniable force for live sound engineers.
Although not yet ready for release, as is normally the case with anything DiGiCo hints at, things are moving ahead at a rate of knots and reality is not far away.
